Beanstalk Journeys Zip Design and Construction
For several years Beanstalk Journeys observed the emerging zip line canopy tour industry from the sidelines. We were not sure if we wanted to enter into this branch of adventure and recreation due to the inherent dangers and risks associated with zip lines historically. We were impressed with some of the designs and operations we saw, but not impressed with others (see the safety paper on this website). Then we had an epiphany.
Zip lines if done safely, are providing society with remarkable experiences. These unique, adventure experiences are more accessible and available for a wider range of the population than traditional ropes courses . The recent development of the zip line adventure experience is addressing a need that people of all ages have for moderate adventure along with fun, family time, recreation and all the benefits of simply being active outdoors. All of these characteristics sum up the Beanstalk Journey mission, so all of the sudden we decided we could design and build zip line experiences that met our safety standards. In 2010 we designed and built two major zip line projects. One was for the city of Morganton, North Carolina, which we are running as a business (The Beanstalk Journey) and the other was in West Virginia for ACE Whitewater. Both designs are quite different, but both are amazing in their own way.
We are very excited about the safe experiences that we are now providing for thousands of people annually. Currently we are in dialogue with numerous other organizations interest in providing zip line experiences in their area.
Similar to the Alpine Tower, which we designed in 1989 (there are now over 275 in existence), we feel we have created a special style and standard for the zip line experience, our way, the Beanstalk Journey way.
ACE Whitewater Zipline Project
In the spring of 2010, we ean discussing a new design with our friends at ACE Whitewater in Oak Hill, West Virginia, to replace the old series of ziplines that had been in use for 2 years. Our new design goals included no use of trees, no handbraking, no participant spinning and no hand-over-hand "pull yourself in" when not reaching the end of each zipline. the new design was a huge success.
Giant A-frames with huge beams and beautiful decks were constructed on aech side of the spectacular canyons that besect the southern sope of New River Gorge. The views from the zips out over the New River Gorge are unmatched. The project was completed by fall of 2010, but we continue to discuss future possibillities for expanding their Canopy Tour.
